“Windflower” aka “alpine
anemone”, the flower named after the wind (anemos = wind)
as the wind caused its flowering and withering, and according
to mythology was the name of the nymph that Zephyr, the god of
the west wind, fell in love with.
She was designed by Alfred Westmacott and built at the famous
Woodnutts yard in Bembridge in 1932 for a Mr A Turquand-Young
and named Wee Mac. A year later she was sold to Mr H Flower and
renamed Windflower which she has been ever since.
She is very much a larger version with cruising
accommodation etc. of Westmacott’s famous X boats. Her gaff
rig is very similar to the original “X” boat design.
Don Wood found her in a field in North Wales.
Don thought the lines were very suitable for the Solent chop,
a view that was to be vindicated on the water. After a major refit
by Symon and Nick Wood, Windflower was relaunched in
2005.
In 2005 she won the Yarmouth YOGAFF Festival
and followed that up by winning the Royal Solent Queen’s
Jubilee Cup.
In 2006 she has been successful winning the
Royal Lymington Regatta with an unbeaten record and a few weeks
later won the Royal Solent Turkey Cup against a substantial fleet
including several modern current racing yachts.
