Graham and Trish Benton bought Dirk II
in 1994 and set about restoring her to something like her original
configuration. Dirk II was built in 1921 at Laboe, nr.
Kiel, Germany by H Arp to a design by W Fife.
She was owned for the early part of her life by
Hans Domizlaff, a well known German yachtsman, who cruised and
raced her extensively. She came to the UK in the '30's, and was
based on the East coast for a number of years, notably winning
the North Sea Race on a couple of occasions. She passed into the
ownership of David Reekie and migrated to the Clyde, where she
raced with the Clyde Cruising Club with some success.
Dirk II's rig has seen a number of changes
over the years, originally a Gaff yawl, Domizlaff converted her
to Bermudian yawl in 1928, which she retained until the 1960's
when the original masts were replaced with aluminium and the rig
chaged to Bermudian ketch. Graham and Trish decided to return
her to Gaff yawl, and set about the structural alterations necessary
to return her to her original configuration.
Dirk II is still raced and cruised extensively,
in 2002 completing a three-month exploration of the Brittany coast,
participating in a number of 'Classic boat' festivals along the
way. She took part in the 2001 America's Cup Jubilee Regatta,
and sails under the burgee of the Royal Solent Yacht Club.
