Corrie

A certain love, admiration and interest always resides once one has owned or sailed on a classic wooden yacht for a time. When the tides change and one's yacht sails away with another owner, nostalgia often fuels the intrigue, interest and excitement of knowing something of the seas on which she is voyaging.

For the Robertson family this is not such a problem as their devotion to Corrie is fathoms deep, and it is fair to say that after 55 years as a Robertson Corrie is more like one of the family than a mere family tradition!

Corrie is a 'Clyde 30 Linear Restricted Class' and was built in 1908 as a gentleman's racing yacht and is now on the National Register of Historic Vessels.

Designed by William Fife and built on the Clyde by Robertsons at Sandbank, Dunoon, Argyllshire, her first owner, W.C.Collins, successfully raced her against the 8 Metre Class.

In 1910, her rig was altered from gaff to Bermudan and in 1998 John and Sarah reluctantly installed an inboard engine - a concession in the crowded conditions of the Solent!

The Robertson's first fell for Corrie in 1947 when Jim Robertson purchased and raced her in RORC races. John, Jim's son, was introduced to sailing Corrie from a very young age and went into partnership with his father in 1962. Fifteen years later he took over the ownership of Corrie and, as an experienced shipwright at the Gosport Boat Yard, John and his wife Sarah lovingly maintain her original condition.

Corrie has cruised far and wide, to Spain, Brittany and Holland, although the familiar waters of the Solent are always a favourite. The America's Cup Jubilee Regatta was a fantastic display of classic boats and Corrie was proud to be a participant in the races.

Since being in the Robertson family Corrie has raced every year and won the Cowes Deauville Race overall in 1978. With John and Sarah's children, Kate and Peter, being keen sailors Corrie will surely remain a devoted member of the Robertson's family and raced for many years to come.
